Paper Experiments
a
In order to experiment with type as image I used the title of the exhibition and poets printed up and cut out, then photographed them at various angles. This would then be the basis for my first few iterations, and I would use the background to create the grid system.
Digital Iterations
edna
After a few digital iterations, I decided to print off one of them and see what it looked like on a light box. I then began to add letters layered on top to see the different effects.
The scans were what I decided to use for my final versions. I liked how the layers on the light box created shadows which truly gave the feeling of echos. The images also had some interesting textures from the printing process. My next step was experimenting with and tweaking my type. I decided to tie in the main text with the background by using both a serif and sans serif typeface. I created a system of how the type could be arranged as a way to keep the feeling of all of the posters being part of the same family.
At this point I had been working in mainly black and white, but I wanted to add color as a way to differentiate the posters, and to represent the poets individual styles. I chose blue for Jerome because of his connection to nature within his poetry, as well as his explicit mentions of water. Charmaine's is green due to her heavy use of technology in her work. Patti's was made pink because of her work with beginning the punk movement.
